 Students: Student Support

Meeting Individual Needs

Wetherby High School aims to meet the needs of all pupils in school no matter what their ability, gender, class or race.  We endeavour to ensure that all those with Special Educational Needs are identified and that they receive the help and support to which they are entitled.

The school is known throughout the area for the quality of work of its Special Educational Needs team, which provides support for any student who experience learning difficulties.  Some students are supported in-class through a dedicated team of Learning Support Assistants, who ensure that the students with whom they work can access the curriculum.  Others may be withdrawn on a short-term basis and taught in small groups in our Learning Support Department.  Care is taken to ensure appropriate support and parental involvement is encouraged.  An Educational Psychologist visits the school regularly and works closely with students, parents and staff.

Learning Support Assistants and Sixth Form students give additional support through the Paired Reading Scheme, which enables students to build up reading confidence and competence.

The school also employs a Learning Mentor and two Behaviour Support Workers to work with some students.

Year 7 Paired Reading Scheme with a Sixth Former

We have an enthusiastic team of 6th Formers who give up their lunchtime to spend reading with Year 7 students.
All Year 7 are invited to take part and this proves to be a very popular lunchtime activity.   Pupils choose which books to read, this can be something they are reading in school or can be something from home.  It is an enjoyable session for all involved and builds links between upper and lower school.

Spelling

Spelling programmes are individual and multi-sensory. They are structured into patterns and with adequate reinforcement so that words are not lost.  We have a variety of spelling games and use drawings and lots of verbal communication to make learning fun.

We aim for students to be:

 - Confident spelling words most frequently used in writing
 - Recognise English spellings that are systematic
 - Attempt to spell new words
 - Have a system for checking spellings
 - Appropriately use the dictionary

   Materials to support spelling includes:

 - The full range of Violet Brand Materials
 - Alpha to Omega Activity Packs
 - Swap by Gamz
