WORK EXPERIENCE

All pupils in Year 10 take part in work experience and Wetherby High School has gained an excellent reputation amongst employers for the attitude and application of our pupils. They attend their placement for 2 weeks in July and, for the vast majority of pupils, the experience proves to be beneficial in terms of learning what happens in the 'outside' world and as an incentive to study hard at school!

CAREERS/ENTERPRISE

All pupils at Wetherby High School have lessons to prepare them for life after school. In conjunction with PHSCE they consider the implications of stereotyping and are given advise on what is required for employment - such as composing CV's, writing application forms, where to find appropriate career's advice. The library has an excellent paper based section on Careers and every computer in school has Kudos installed - a personal analytical career's tool. Outside providers come into school during Year 11 to give an intensive 2 day course for all students on the recruitment process and what employers are looking for.

A Career's Advisor from Leeds IGEN comes into school regularly and all students in Years 10 and 11 have the opportunity for a one to one discussion, parents are welcome to attend these interviews. Year 10 students visit the Career's Convention held in the Leeds Armouries.

Staff at Wetherby High School are aware of the importance of making our students 'enterprising' individuals and particularly emphasise in their lessons the three strands of
- financial capability
- enterprise capability
- business and economic understanding.

Extra curricular activities covering these aspects include:
- year 10 Pupil to Practitioner one day course
- Leeds Credit Union student bank
- Participation in the National Enterprise Week (pupils taking assemblies, 'Making a 10 grow', national 'Make Your Mark Challenge')
- One day Army Personal Development course

Pathways to Employment

This was the second two-day workshop for the other half of Year 11. It focused on key skills involved in applying for jobs including telephone manner, preparation of CVs and interview techniques. Pupils worked in groups of tens and were set several stimulating challenges to encourage their skills of thinking, communicating, presenting, taking personal responsibility and working as team-players.

The presenter commented afterwards that this was one of the best groups that she had ever worked with in a school. She made an almost identical comment when she came to work with the other half of the Year Group in November so much credit is due to all of our Y11 pupils for their behaviour, enthusiasm and work-rate.
