 OTHER RECENT EVENTS INCLUDE:

Exchange Visit to Holland

In the week before February half term, two Year 8 and two Year 10 students, accompanied by two members of staff, went on a visit to Kampenerwaad College near Rotterdam.  The purpose of the visit was to give our students a taste of what school life is like in another country.  The staff and students in Holland went out of their way to make our party as welcome as possible and organised a really interesting itinerary for them.  The aim is to form an on-going link between the two schools and a party from Kampenerwaad are already planning a visit to Wetherby High School in June.

Red Nose Day

The school raised £678.34 for Comic Relief.  Our Sixth Formers organised a variety of fund-raising activities that went on around lessons throughout the day and as always everyone joined in with great enthusiasm and generosity.

The German Business Experience

On Tuesday 24 February a party of Year 9 and 10 students took part in The German Business Experience at the North East Leeds City Learning Centre. They became international entrepreneurs for the morning and worked together in groups. The set task was for the students to come up with an idea of a product they could export to Germany. They then made a business phone call in German to arrange a business meeting and wrote an e-mail in German. The groups then created a powerpoint presentation to market their product. Finally each group presented their ideas in German to the rest of the students.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

Several of our students are actively engaged in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme which is organised in school by Mr Dinsdale, a member of our Science staff.  For those of you who may not know much about it, the Duke of Edinburgh programme is a real adventure from beginning to end.  You just need to be between 14 and 24 and  keen to try something new.   The scheme focuses on four specific areas: Physical, Skills, Voluntary and Expeditions. The aim of the Award is to develop personal skills such as first aid, team working, health, fitness and well-being along with contributing to the local community through the voluntary activity.  Students have helped around school with Paired Reading and assisting with PE clubs. The Award is also helpful in applications to Univercity and colleges as it requires maturity and commitment to complete it successfully. Participants seem to especially enjoy the expeditions, where they navigate their own way over 15 - 25 miles, even if they do occasionally get cold and wet!

Young people can do activities at three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold.
