A summary of Sixth Form Courses
|
AS and A (AS+A2) Levels |
|
These courses are intended for those of you who want to stay in the sixth form for two years in order to achieve a high level of academic excellence. Many such students will be aiming for Higher Education.
Note, that our more successful students have most of their GCSE's at grade B or above and that some departments insist on this grade in their subject for entry to their courses. All classes are taught in mixed ability groups ranging in size from 5 to 30 students. The average class size however is usually between 8 and 10 Students. |
|
Applied AS Levels |
|
Like A level this is a two year course. It is particularly suited to those of you who wish to follow a Vocational course rather than the traditional A level route and can lead either to a career or a Higher Education course in the chosen vocational area.
Applied A levels are equivalent in academic rigour to A levels but allow wider scope for assessment than purely terminal examinations. Vocational A levels can be followed as either a single or double options with a single course equivalent to 1 A level and a double 2 A levels. All classes are taught in mixed ability groups with an average class of between 5 and 10 students. |

Further Education (F.E) Courses
Continuing Education will be able to provide several evening courses (7.30pm to 9.30pm) at Wetherby High School. The close working relationships which has been developed between the High School and Park Lane College means that a wider variety of courses are now available to sixth formers.
Full details will be available in the Area Prospectus which will be available later in the year. Students who wish to improve 'basic' qualifications may decide to pursue GCSE courses outside school timetable either because their choice of subjects is 'blocked' on our option scheme or because a subject is not offered by the school.
A variety of other courses are offered at local F.E centres which can be used to supplement or complement students studies, if they have sufficient time. |

SCHOOL STUDY
Part of the purpose of Sixth Form Education, whatever the course of study, is for students to develop their own initiatives for work methods, learning and research. Clearly homework will be part of this process but all of them will have periods on their timetable set aside for compulsory 'school study'. Sixth Form tutors will give advice on the development of appropriate study techniques to help students to make full use of this valuable time and the school will provide suitable accomodation. Learning to use study time wisely and well is an essential and central part of becoming a sixth form student. All departments support this development of our students by using a range of teaching strategies. These have included - |
